Description

This listing describes a row of four headstones located in the churchyard about 9 meters north of the north aisle of the Church of St Peter. These monuments date from the 18th century and are made of slate.

The first headstone is a Condy headstone from 1785, featuring a nowy head with a carved fan, a cherub's head, and wings. It has an inscription panel with a verse, which was partly broken at the time of the survey in May 1985.

The second headstone commemorates Renald Strout, who died in 1744. It has a rounded top with a moulded border and features a carved primitive skull, a coffin with a cadaver inside, and a coffin lid.

The third headstone is for Richard Batten, who passed away in 1782. This nowy-headed stone has a plain moulded border and displays fine lettering in its inscription and verse.

The fourth headstone belongs to John Bazeley and dates from the early 18th century. It is a plain slate stone with a scratch-carved border around the inscription. It features a well-carved skull with crossed bones and a flower in the corner to the right, along with bold lettering.
