Description

SX 48 SW MARYSTOW SYDENHAM

6/184 Walls, 2 pairs of gatepiers and - gate to gardens to the east and 21.3.67 south of Sydenham House

GV II

Walls, 2 pairs of gatepiers and a gate. Circa early C18, the gate probably a 1930s replacement of the original. Stone rubble and cob walls, ashlar and stone rubble gatepiers, wrought iron gate. The walls surrounding the garden to the east of Sydenham House are stone rubble, partly plastered, with slate capping and ramp up to ashlar gatepiers of cross plan. The gatepiers terminate in a moulded cornice. Segmental arched gate is flanked by wrought iron panels with an elaborate dograil and a low frieze of scrolly arabesques across all 3 sections. The elaborate over-throw terminates in the Tremayne crest - 2 arms holding a head wearing a high-crowned hat. The wall extends beyond the south of the house forming the garden wall to the south garden, where it is cob on a stone rubble base with slate coping. The gateway to the south garden is flanked by stone rubble piers of rectangular section with moulded cornices and probably C20 moulded granite pinnacles with ball finials. The Sydenham estate passed by marriage from the Wise to the Tremayne family in 1694.
