Description

The structure consists of walls, two pairs of gatepiers, and a gate, dating from the early 18th century, with the gate likely being a replacement from the 1930s. The walls are made of stone rubble and cob, while the gatepiers are constructed from ashlar and stone rubble, featuring a wrought iron gate. The garden walls to the east of Sydenham House are primarily stone rubble, partially plastered, with slate capping and a ramp leading up to the ashlar gatepiers, which have a cross plan and are topped with a moulded cornice. The segmental arched gate is flanked by wrought iron panels that include an intricate dograil and a low frieze adorned with scrolly arabesques across all three sections. An elaborate over-throw features the Tremayne crest, depicting two arms holding a head wearing a high-crowned hat. The wall extends to the south of the house, forming the garden wall for the south garden, which is constructed of cob on a stone rubble base with slate coping. The gateway to the south garden is flanked by stone rubble piers of rectangular section, which have moulded cornices and likely 20th-century moulded granite pinnacles with ball finials. The Sydenham estate transitioned by marriage from the Wise family to the Tremayne family in 1694.
