Description
Crowndale is a farmhouse built around 1830, with some later alterations. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and features a low-pitched hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves. There is a stack on the left side of the building. The layout is a double-depth plan with a central entrance hall and a staircase at the rear, along with a later two-storey service wing to the left.
The farmhouse has two storeys and a symmetrical front with three windows on the first floor, all 12-pane sashes. The ground floor has 16-pane sashes on the right and left, all set in plain granite surrounds. The central entrance consists of a four-panelled door with an overlight featuring glazing bars, and it is sheltered by an original porch with rendered side walls that support a small entablature.
On the left side of the building, there are two 4-pane sashes at ground floor level. The right side has two similar sashes on the first floor, and on the ground floor, there are two 16-pane sashes and a 6-pane sash. The rear wing steps back with a lower roof line and is also hipped, featuring a small single-storey addition. The rear has two similar first-floor sashes, a 20th-century window on the ground floor to the right, and a porch at the angle with a door and two 6-pane lights. The rear wing contains plate glass windows on both the ground and first floors with brick dressings.
The earlier house at Crowndale, which has been demolished, was the birthplace of Sir Francis Drake in 1542. The farm was previously part of the Duke of Bedford's estate.
