Description
Fitzford Gatehouse is a building dating from the 16th century, with a rebuild in 1871. It was the seat of the Fitz family from the 15th century to the early 17th century, and the remains of their mansion were demolished in the mid-19th century. The gatehouse was reconstructed stone by stone in 1871. It is a three-storey rectangular structure featuring a granite ashlar front and local stone on the sides and back. The building has a castellated parapet and moulded stringcourses, along with carved gargoyles. The doorway has a four-centred granite arch with oak-leaf carvings in the spandrels, and an inner arch that is three-centred. There are two and three-light stone mullioned windows with hood moulding. The gatehouse is currently used as a dwelling house.
