Description

An early 18th-century barn with associated flanking walls and piers, situated approximately 18 metres north of the gateway to Collacombe Manor. Later 18th and early 19th-century additions and alterations were also made. The barn is constructed of granite rubble, with a slate roof to the front wing and left side; the remainder of the roof is corrugated iron. The front elevation features a tall door to the left, two ventilation slits, a central cart entry with a buttress, a timber lintel, and a hood, a further ventilation slit, and a row of pigeon holes and perches to the right. Attached to the left is a single-storey shed with double doors to the front, alongside a similar addition to the right, and another single-storey shed with double doors to the front and a side door. The range extends further to the right, featuring a wide door with strap hinges and a heavy timber lintel, a two-light casement window with six panes per light on the left, and an eight-pane light to the right; this end is single-storey to accommodate the ground's slope. The right return has a 20th-century cart entry with three pigeon holes above. The left return displays three ventilation slits arranged in a triangular pattern within the gable end, a slate string course, a lean-to continuing the line to the front, separated by a straight joint, two stable doors, and a single-pane window. The rear elevation presents two straight joints to the left, indicating progressive extensions of the barn up the slope of the land. A launder is located at the base of the wall, along with the remains of a waterwheel and two mortices. A doorway with a timber lintel and ventilation slit is present to the right, while the cart entry corresponding to the main front entry has been rebuilt in concrete. A wall steps back to the right, featuring a raised coped verge, a 20th-century lean-to, and three further ventilation slits. Walls extend approximately 2 metres to the right and left of the barn, supported by irregular granite piers approximately 2 metres high. From the pier furthest to the right, a retaining wall is approximately 5 metres long. The second pier from the left supports a further wall, 3 metres long and 2 metres high. These walls and piers enclose a courtyard between the barn and the gateway to Collacombe Manor. The interior cart entries feature heavy inner timber lintels, with most of the roof structure being a 20th-century replacement, retaining only the ends of the original collars, one of which is rough-cut and displays mortices.
