Description
This is a barn located approximately 5 meters to the north-east of Lower West Coombe Farmhouse, dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of granite rubble with dressed quoins and features a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. The barn was originally open and unpartitioned, likely with a central threshing floor. At a later stage, a smaller room was created at the lower right end, extending up to the first floor height, while the rest of the barn remained open.
A lean-to structure has been added along the length of the rear wall, which is open-fronted. The barn is mainly a single storey, but the smaller room is ceiled. There is a tall cart entrance located to the left of the center on the south-east front, with a wooden lintel, and a smaller single doorway to the right, also with a wooden lintel. The front wall features several irregular small recesses and an owl hole in the right-hand gable end. The lean-to at the rear, which is open-fronted, is supported by monolithic granite posts. A smaller doorway on the rear wall opposes the wide entrance at the front.
Inside, there is a stone dividing cross wall that reaches up to the first floor height. The roof, dating from the 18th or 19th century, is pegged and features straight principals with collars that are slightly set into the trusses. This barn forms a cohesive group with the other farm buildings and houses in this traditional moorland fringe settlement.
