Description

This barn, located about 25 metres south of Higher Combe Farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century. It is built from granite rubble with a layer of cob beneath the eaves and features a half-hipped thatched roof. The barn has two storeys and numerous blocked openings in the north wall. To the left, there is a possibly old studded plank door with strap-hinges, framed by a 20th-century imitation Tudor door-frame, and topped with a 20th-century pantiled hood. The east gable and south wall feature late 19th-century windows with segmental arches made of red brick and small-paned wood casements. The south wall also has a well-crafted plank door with strap-hinges that opens in two sections, along with a plank door leading to the loft above it. An owl hole is present in the east gable. The interior has been used as a stable since the late 19th century and includes good cast-iron fittings, posts with moulded tops, and partitions with iron grilles. The roof retains some old roof-trusses with collars pegged to the faces of the principal rafters, and there are no common rafters, just thick thatching spars.
