Description
This property comprises three cottages, originally one house, located in Buckland Monachorum. Evidence suggests the core of the building dates back to the 16th century, with significant alterations in the 19th century. The walls are rendered stone rubble with a gable ended roof covered in asbestos slate. A brick gable stack is located at the left-hand end, with a projecting oven, while lateral brick chimney shafts are found at the rear and right-hand end, along with a brick axial stack.
The original layout likely consisted of three rooms and a through-passage, with the lower and inner rooms heated by gable end stacks. The hall stack’s placement remains unclear. 19th-century outshuts have been added to the rear of the building. The fenestration was updated in the 19th century, and the interior was likely modernised at this time, concealing any original features. Number 11 is a mid-19th century extension.
The front facade is asymmetrical with a four-window arrangement. Windows to the first floor and ground floor on the right-hand side are late 19th or early 20th century, featuring 12-panel sashes with horns. The two ground floor windows to the left are 19th century, 2-light casements with small panes, the left-hand one featuring H-L hinges. A 16th century granite doorway, unchamfered, with a pointed arch, sits to the right of the centre, now fitted with a probably 20th-century part-glazed door. The interior was not inspected, but the occupant reports no visible early features, although some may be concealed.
