Description
The outbuilding immediately to the east of East Heywood Farmhouse is a Grade II listed structure, originally likely serving as a detached kitchen for the farmhouse. It dates back to the 17th century and features cob walls with a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. The building has a rectangular, one-room plan with an axial fireplace that creates a small separate area at the left-hand end. There are stairs in a projection at the front of the left-hand side, and it may have been extended at the right-hand end.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front. There is a doorway to the left of centre, featuring a 17th-century square-headed chamfered wooden doorframe and a 19th-century plank door. The right-hand side of the front wall is recessed, and to the right of the doorway, a pentice roof is supported by rough granite posts, likely intended to shelter a pump or well.
Inside, there is a large fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel, which may be a reused element, and one oven remains at the rear, with evidence of others. The interior also includes two cross beams, both chamfered, with one featuring hollow step stops and the other with straight cut stops. This outbuilding is a rare survival of a 17th-century detached kitchen and is an important part of the group with the adjoining farmhouse, located just a few feet from its back door.
