Description

A C17 stable with an attached cart shed, likely dating to the late 18th or early 19th century, stands about 5 metres southeast of Walreddon Manor. The stable is constructed of granite ashlar, banded with Hurdwick stone, with granite dressings. The rear and side, which does not face Walreddon Manor, is in random granite rubble with large quoins to the rear midstrey, under a slate roof with a gable end stack to the front wing on the right. The cart shed is in rubble with granite monolith piers and a slate roof. The overall plan is L-shaped, with a wing projecting to the front right, both parts being two storeys high. A gable end stack heats the wing. A cart entry is on the front left, and a rear central midstrey provides access.

The stable has a fireplace in the left gable end wall, but this gable end also includes pigeon holes. A room sits above the midstrey at the rear. The cart shed extends the L-plan, enclosing the stable yard. The two-storey stable has a cart entry to the left with a timber lintel, a doorway to the left with a four-centred arched granite head, roll-moulded with scroll and pyramid stops. To the right of the doorway are two granite two-light casements, roll-moulded. At the first floor, there are two windows to the left and two loading doors to the right, all within plain surrounds. The wing to the right has a four-centred arched granite doorway to the inner side, roll-moulded with carved leaves in the spandrels, and a similar loading door above. The front gable end of this wing is in random rubble and features a stack.

Attached to the gable end of the wing is a five-bay open-fronted cart shed. Between the cart shed and the stable, one bay forms a covered way, with an elliptical arched door in the rear wall. The gable end of the stable to the left has six rows of pigeon holes with slate perches. The gable end to the right was rebuilt in the 20th century, incorporating a loading door at the upper level. The side of the front wing features a two-light granite casement, unglazed, with a chamfered mullion and an iron stanchion.

The rear of the stable has a central midstrey with a hipped roof and a slate string course, possibly a later addition, with blocked openings to the left and right having wedge-shaped heads. Inside the stable, there is an eight-bay roof with lapped rafters, braces pegged to the collars (some cambered), and two rows of purlins stepped from each other, likely dating to the late 18th century. The left gable end has a fireplace with a flat chamfered granite lintel and granite jamb to the left; the wall is corbelled out to the right. The gable end flue to the right appears not to have had a fireplace, as there’s no staining on the walls. The former room over the midstrey is plastered. Stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops are present.
