Description
Woodtown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and some 20th-century changes. The construction is painted rubble with a tiled hipped roof, half-hipped to the right, featuring a ridge stack to the right of the front entrance and a gable end stack to the left. Originally, the plan was uncertain, but the house now has a 3-room layout, with the main entrance directly into the central room. The upper end room is situated to the right, and the central room has a back-to-back fireplace arrangement with a heating stack. The room to the left, originally a dairy, is heated by an end stack, likely a later addition. A stair tower is located to the rear left of the central room.
The farmhouse has two storeys and four windows on the front. The first floor has three 20th-century 2-light casements under the eaves and a four-pane light with margin glazing above a porch. The ground floor features a door with a glazed panel at the end on the right, a gabled porch incorporating stable doors, and an inner door with a chamfered granite surround with step-stopped details. To the left of the porch, there's a 3-light casement in a chamfered granite surround with mullions cut away, and another 2-light casement to the left. A small, single-storey lean-to extends from the front left, while a two-storey lean-to stable is attached to the end on the left, incorporating a door and a loading door. The left side of the stable has a single-storey lean-to, each with pitched roofs covered in corrugated iron.
The rear elevation has the upper end to the left, featuring a 2-light casement at both ground and first floor levels. A single-storey lean-to conceals any potential evidence of a rear passage entry; the lean-to itself has a 2-light casement on its side and a rear entrance door. A two-storey stair tower to the rear has a single light with a slate lintel in the gable end, and a blocked window in the gable. A 20th-century 4-pane light is located to the right side at ground floor level, with a small, single-storey addition in the angle to the right, featuring a rear door. The lower end to the right has a 2-light casement on both ground and first floor levels, while the stable has a small, unglazed window at ground floor.
The interior of the central room features a slate floor, six cross beams (four of which are chamfered), and a 20th-century fireplace. A ledged door in a moulded frame leads to the rear stair tower, while a four-panelled door opens to the end room on the left. The end room to the left has four cross beams (two of which are chamfered) and a 20th-century fireplace. The stair tower has an unusually wide wooden newel stair around a single post. At the first floor, a single light is set within a hollow-chamfered granite surround with an iron stanchion. A chamfered wooden doorframe provides access to a rear longitudinal passage. Visible C19 principal rafters are present at first floor level. A blocked fireplace is in the upper end room on the ground floor.
