Description
The Whitchurch War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is made of rough-hewn granite and is located prominently at the eastern edge of the churchyard of the Church of St Andrew, which is a Grade I listed building. The churchyard wall and bank have been modified at this site, replaced with railings to provide clear views of the memorial.
Standing at 3.3 meters high, the memorial features a short, rough-hewn granite Latin cross that sits atop a tall, tapering plinth. The entire structure rests on a shallow, square base with three steps. The front (eastern) face of the cross is adorned with a relief-carved IHS Christogram.
The main inscription is located on a smoothed area of the eastern face of the plinth, crafted in leaded lettering. It reads: "TO THE UNDYING MEMORY OF OUR/ BRAVE WHITCHURCH PARISHIONERS/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (20 NAMES)."
Additionally, on the eastern face of the upper step of the base, there is an inscription that reads "1939" followed by a column of five names and "1945."
