Description
The Buckland Brewer War Memorial, built in 1949, is made of granite. It features a stepped plinth that supports a tapered rectangular shaft topped with a Celtic cross. The memorial is enclosed by a coursed rubble stone wall with coping stones and iron railings, which can be accessed through an iron gate.
On the front face of the shaft, the inscription reads "TO OUR FALLEN/HEROES 1914 - 18/" followed by a list of ten names. The plinth continues with "WORLD WAR, 1939 - 1945/" and includes eight names, four of whom returned to Buckland Brewer.
The memorial was unveiled on 11th November 1949 by Brigadier C.H.M Peto, with dedication by local clergy and dignitaries. It serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the community and is noted for its skilled design and craftsmanship, as well as its prominent location next to the lych gate and outside the Grade II* church.
