Description
The Onibury War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in a churchyard, dating from around 1920 and later updated to include names from after 1945.
Constructed from limestone, the memorial features ashlar and rough-hewn materials. It consists of a Celtic wheel-head cross and shaft that sits atop a strongly tapered base, which rises from the ground. The memorial is situated to the south-west of the church, along the path leading from the lych-gate to the south porch.
The north face of the memorial displays a rock-hammered head and shaft of the cross, with smooth ashlar panels. The circle-head is rock-hammered, and an ashlar cross with splayed ends and a circular center stands out in relief. Below this cross is a large ashlar panel inscribed with the words: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF OUR GALLANT HEROES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN DEFENCE OF THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918." The names of the Fallen are inscribed below this panel. The tapered base features the dates 1939 - 1945 above the names of those who fell in that conflict. The flanks of the base have blank panels, and the rest of the memorial is also blank.
