Description
Nos 6 and 8 South Street are two buildings dating from 1735, with parts that may be from the 17th century or earlier. They have painted stucco fronts and feature three flush frame sash windows on the first floor, which have central glazing bars. Number 6 has a ground floor splay bay and a six-panel entrance door with sunk upper panels. There is a wider passageway to the right, leading to another six-panel door with fielded upper panels under the same lintel. Number 8 has a mid-19th century wooden shop front with carved mullions, a four-panel door with a fanlight, and a ground floor sash window to the right, which now lacks glazing bars. Inside number 8, the ground floor ceiling features nine square panels created by massive beams and cross-beams, adorned with roll-and-ogee mouldings, likely in wood, and plaster panels with central rosettes, possibly resembling Tudor roses. All the listed buildings in South Street are part of a group.
