Description
The Market House, dated 1842, is a two-storey building with a stucco front featuring a pediment. The lower storey has rusticated openings, with the central opening adorned with ornamental cast-iron gates. The upper storey is distinguished by Ionic pilasters and three round-headed sash windows with glazing bars, along with a circular panel in the tympanum. At the top, there is a bell-cote supported by four Tuscan columns, which holds a small dome. Behind the Market House, a central cobbled lane is lined with market stalls known as the Pannier Market. While most of these stalls have been re-fronted, some retain their open design with cast-iron Doric supports. A stucco gateway at the south end of the lane also bears the date 1842. The front of the building faces the end of High Street, providing a prominent view. All the listed buildings in South Street are part of a group.
