Description
The Black Horse Hotel, located on the west side of High Street, dates back to 1735. It features a two-gabled front that has undergone significant restoration. The lower storey is refaced with rustic brickwork, and oak-mullion bays have been added. The oversailing upper floors are roughcast and have modern or extensively restored slightly canted mullion transom windows. The building has new barge boards, an eaves cornice, and a new slate roof. One doorway retains a genuine heavily moulded frame, with curved braces supporting the first-floor overhang. The ancient door adds to its character. The front entry is bordered by cobbled margins, and to the right, there is a stud and plank panelled partition. Inside, the front room features a plaster panel above the fireplace inscribed with "TD SD 1681" and hewn chamfer beams. All the listed buildings on High Street are part of a group.
