Description
The Town Hall, built in 1861, is a Grade II listed building located on the east side of High Street. It is designed in a classical style, featuring a rusticated stone lower storey and red brick with stone dressings above. The building has a three-window pedimented central projection that extends over the pavement, supported by round arches, with a cartouche displaying the date in the tympanum. The sash windows are adorned with stone architraves and cill brackets, some topped with pediments or cornices. A stone ogee bracket main cornice adds to the architectural detail. The front part of the ground floor is open and supported by stone piers and arches. Inside, the Town Hall contains notable portraits, and the Council Chamber features panelling from the old Plough Inn. The Town Hall is part of a group of listed buildings along High Street.
