Description
37 High Street is a house dated 1910, built for Christine Hamlyn. It features colourwashed brick and a gable-ended roof with a ridge brick stack on the left side.
The house has a plan with two main rooms on either side of a central entrance hall, designed in the Tudor style. The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical front that includes two windows. The windows are two and three-light transomed wooden casements with square-paned leaded lights, and there are small gables above the first-floor windows supported by brackets. A central circular window on the first floor also has square-paned leaded lights.
The central entrance has a segmental-headed door opening with a fanlight above, leading to a central plank door flanked by blank sidelights. There are two vertical friezes of carved wooden fruits from Oberammergau, Germany, and a large cambered wooden hood with lead capping supported by fretwork brackets. Three steps with slate treads and half-round nosings lead up to the door.
On the right side, which faces the sea, there is a bay window with a similar design, and a first-floor balcony supported by curling wooden brackets and featuring an ornamental wooden balustrade. The interior has not been inspected.
