Description

The Old Malt House and the adjoining cottage to the left are a row of two cottages located on Vine Street in Winkleigh. They date from around the mid to later 17th century, with later additions from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The cottages have rendered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end and gabled at the left. There is a projecting rendered rubble stack at the left gable end and a brick stack at the right end.

Originally, there may have been three cottages, but the right-hand cottage now has a two-room plan with an integral garage at the left end, which was converted from another room, and a wing added behind its right-hand end, dating from the later 17th or 18th century. The cottage to the left has a one-room plan heated by a gable-end stack, with a 19th-century converted outbuilding behind.

The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical window arrangement with two windows on the left cottage and three on the right. The left-hand cottage has a late 19th or early 20th-century casement window, with a two-light window on the first floor and a three-light window below, accompanied by a 20th-century panelled and part-glazed door to the right. The Old Malt House has one original three-light wooden mullion window on the first floor to the left, situated above 20th-century double garage doors, and otherwise features mid-20th-century two and three-light casements, with a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right of centre. A wing extends behind the right-hand end.

The interior of The Old Malt House does not display any original features, although some may be concealed, and the roof structure could be of interest.
