Description

Linden House is a house located on South Street in Winkleigh, dating from the late 18th century with some 20th-century alterations. The building features rendered walls and a mansard slate roof, with rendered brick stacks at either end. It has a double depth plan with one room on either side of a central stair hall, and small service ranges at both ends.

The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical five-window front. The first floor has late 20th-century PVC windows that mimic two original 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor to the left, while early 20th-century replica sashes are found to the right. A central original pedimented porch is supported by Ionic pillars at the front, with flat pilasters behind. The doorcase has panelled reveals and features an original six-panelled door topped with a semi-circular fanlight. Each end of the house has a small lower service range, and the rear elevation includes a semicircular headed stair window at the centre.

Inside, the front right-hand room retains its original chimneypiece, which is decorated with a frieze carved with a foliage design and a central fluted plaque. The two left-hand rooms have simple moulded cornices, while the first-floor room features an egg and dart cornice. The open string staircase has carved tread ends, turned balusters, and square newels with recessed panels. The property also includes a rendered rubble garden wall at the front, with square gate piers at the centre and at both ends.
