Description
This is a row of three cottages located on Cooper's Hill, Winkleigh, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. The walls are a mix of rendered rubble and cob, with a thatched roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right. There are two brick stacks: one axial, serving cottages number 2 and 3, and another at the left gable end of cottage number 1. Originally, each cottage likely had a single-room plan. Cottage number 3 is larger than the others, with a 19th-century lean-to addition against its right-hand end. Cottage number 1 has a 20th-century rear addition. The axial stack provides heating for cottages number 2 and 3, while cottage number 1 is heated by the gable-end stack.
The front of the cottages features an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows per cottage: a 1:1:2 window pattern. Cottage number 1 has 20th-century three-light casement windows without glazing bars, and a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right. Cottage number 2 has late 19th or early 20th century three-light casement windows without glazing bars and a 20th-century part-glazed door to the right. Cottage number 3 has large, late 20th-century single-light top-opening casement windows without glazing bars. A small, 20th-century gabled porch is located on the left-hand side with a 19th-century panelled and glazed door behind. There is a tiled roof to the lean-to at the right-hand side of cottage number 3. The interiors of cottages number 1, 2, and 3 were not accessible for inspection at the time of survey, and no early features were visible in cottage number 1.
