Description

Abbotsham Church of England Primary School and the attached gateway were built in 1851 at the expense of W. Cheywood Esq. of Kenwith Castle. The building is made of coursed slatestone rubble and features a gabled slate roof with stone end stacks. The schoolroom is located to the right of the schoolmaster's house, and the architectural style combines elements of Domestic Tudor and Gothic.

The structure is two storeys high with a four-window range. It has a gabled and stone-coped porch that features a pointed chamfered archway and a segmental stone arch over a 20th-century inner door. The porch is flanked by tympanum arches above two mid-19th century ovolo-moulded wood-mullioned and transomed three-light windows. Similar windows are found on the first floor to the left, along with a one-light window in the left-hand bay of the ground floor. To the left, there are two plank doors, and a late 19th-century chamfered wood-mullioned and transomed three-light window has been inserted into a blocked doorway in the lower bay on the right. The rear of the building also features similar ovolo-moulded windows.

Additionally, there is a gateway attached to the right, which leads into the churchyard of the Church of St. Helen. This gateway has a pediment-shaped stone-coped parapet above a segmental-arched doorway. The school and gateway are included for their group value.
