Description

Old Rixlade is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. The building features colourwashed render over coursed slatestone rubble, with some cob, and has a gabled slate roof. There is an external stone stack on the left end, along with a rendered stone ridge stack and right end stacks. The layout consists of a three-unit plan with a through-passage to the right of the central hall and a 19th-century rear outshut.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The late 19th-century half-glazed door is set within a bracketed and pedimented architrave, flanked by late 19th-century canted bay windows that have horned plate-glass sashes. There are flat rendered arches above an early 19th-century sixteen-pane sash window to the left and 12-pane sashes on the first floor. A similar 12-pane sash and a late 19th-century horned 12-pane sash are located in the left gable end.

Inside, there is an early to mid-19th-century dog-leg staircase with a landing at the rear, featuring stick balusters and turned newels. The room to the left includes a chamfered beam, two 18th-century plank doors, an 18th-century panelled door, and a 19th-century fireplace surround. On the first floor, there is an 18th-century panelled door. The A-frame roof trusses each have a ridge purlin set in a crossed apex, with trenching and pegs used to hold the through purlins, which are now missing. The roof pitch was widened in the 19th century.
