Description

Chaltaborough is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with a front wing and rear stair turret added in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed slatestone rubble, with colourwashed render on the front. The building features a gabled slate roof, an external stone stack at the left end finished in 19th-century brick, a mid-19th-century brick stack at the right end, and a 17th-century rendered stone rear lateral stack serving the central hall.

The layout consists of a three-unit plan with a through-passage at the lower end (to the right) of the central hall, which was extended in the early 19th century to form an L-plan with the front left wing. The house is two storeys high. The early 19th-century front of the 17th-century wing is symmetrical with a three-window range, featuring a six-panelled door set in a moulded wood architrave and flat rendered arches above 20th-century horned 12-pane sashes. The early 19th-century wing to the left has a front with a two-window range, a late 19th-century half-glazed door to the right, a similar 20th-century sash, and two early 19th-century twelve-pane sashes. At the rear of the 17th-century wing, there is a tall early 19th-century stair-light with switch tracery at the head of the sash.

Inside, the house has early 19th-century panelled shutters and doors, a fireplace from around 1840 in the front right room with a cast-iron grate and blue-tile surround, and a flat stone arch over the 17th-century open fireplace in the central hall. There are 20th-century stairs in the stair turret.
