Description

No 2 Venton Cottages and the attached outbuilding are two dwellings, now functioning as a house and outbuilding, dating from the mid to late 17th century. The structure is built of roughcast stone and cob, topped with a hipped and gabled artificial slate roof, and features a 20th-century brick ridge stack. The building has a three-unit plan with a cross passage to the left of the central hall. It is two storeys high and has a three-window range. A 20th-century porch and door are located to the left, and there are flat arches over late 19th and 20th-century two-light casements.

Inside, the ground floor has chamfered and plain beams, and there is an 18th-century plank door with a sneck latch at the rear of the passage. The roof structure is a 17th-century A-frame with lap-jointed collars and a ridge purlin set into notched apexes.

The attached outbuilding, which was formerly a separate dwelling, is a two-storey structure also built of roughcast stone and cob, with a corrugated iron roof and a 20th-century metal door. The rear wall features a 19th-century metal door. Inside, the outbuilding has a 17th-century three-bay A-frame roof with lap-jointed collars and a ridge purlin set into notched apexes. The first-floor beams have been removed, but there is a 17th-century fireplace on the right end wall of the first floor, which has a wattle and daub hood resting on a plain corbelled bressummer.
