Description
IDEFORD FORE STREET, Ideford SX 87 NE 4/91 Stapley Cottage - GV II
Cottage. Early C17. Whitewashed and plastered; slate roof, gabled at ends (formerly thatched); projecting front lateral stack with tall brick shafts projecting left end stack. L plan. Single depth main range with 2 heated rooms, a rear right unheated wing at right angles to the main range, rear left single-storey lean-to probably a later addition. A rather puzzling plan form. There is no hard evidence that the main range was ever any longer than it is at present. The entrance is on the right end of the house, at the junction between the wing and the main range, but no passage exists. The left hand room of the main range may have been a parlour with a hall/kitchen to the right, heated by the lateral stack and an unheated service wing to the rear of the hall/kitchen. 2 storeys. 2 window front, the lateral stack to right of centre, casement windows with glazing bars. The rear wing has a 2-light timber mullioned window on the ground floor. Interior Several features of interest. The right hand room has a half-beam at the right end with step stops and a fireplace with a step stopped lintel. The left hand room has a half beam at the left end with a scroll stops and a fireplace with scroll- stopped lintel. Rebuilt stair against rear wall of left hand room, 2 first floor fireplaces. The house is documented to 1628 and is said to have been built by Simon Tapley with money from the Feoffee Charity Trustees. An attractive small vernacular house of the region.
