Description
Crossways is a cottage dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. It features a whitewashed and rendered exterior with a thatched roof that has a plain ridge and is hipped at the ends. The left end has a cob stack with a brick shaft, while the right end stack is truncated. The building has a single depth plan, originally consisting of three rooms, with the left-hand room being a narrow unheated service room. The partition between the two heated rooms on the right has been removed, resulting in a two-room layout.
The cottage is two storeys high and has an attractive three-window front with regular fenestration. The front door is positioned to the right of the centre and is sheltered by a thatched porch supported by posts. Located on a corner site, the cottage is slightly set back from the road and features a rounded front left corner. Most of the windows are sliding sashes with glazing bars, except for a 9-pane fixed window on the ground floor to the left and a very small two-light casement with glazing bars on the first floor to the left.
Inside, the fireplace has stone rubble jambs and a re-sited stopped lintel, along with a rough exposed cross beam. There is a blocked door on the rear wall and the right-hand fireplace is also blocked.
