Description

SS 90 SW THORVERTON THORVERTON 8/158 Baptist Church - II Baptist Church. 1833-4, central bay of front rebuilt 1955 (Stell). Whitewashed rendered cob, the front elevation probably brick, plastered and blocked out ; hipped slate roof. Plan: Wide rectangular plan with 2 windows to each side, a (ritual) west end gallery and a narrow room behind the (ritual) east end wall of the Church. Central entrance at (ritual) west end into passage below west end gallery. Symmetrical 3-bay front with corner pilasters, deep eaves with a dentil cornice and a small central pediment, also with a dentil cornice above the central bay which is slightly broken forward. Deeply-recessed central panelled door below a 4-centred fanlight; 2-light windows with 4-centred heads in the flanking bays and arched lights with glazing bars. One upper window as omitted in 1955 when the central bay was rebuilt (Stell). 2-light windows, two to each side with 4-centred heads, margin glazing and arched light. Interior The west gallery, on iron columns, has ornamental iron balusters. Rostrum with C19 turned balusters and some C20 wrought iron ; (ritual) east wall with tall triangular-headed recess in moulded plaster with a text round the head. Set of C19 benches.
