Description

The Baptist Church in Thorverton was built between 1833 and 1834, with the central bay of the front rebuilt in 1955. The church is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob, with the front elevation likely made of brick that has been plastered and blocked out, topped by a hipped slate roof. The building has a wide rectangular plan featuring two windows on each side, a ritual west end gallery, and a narrow room behind the ritual east end wall.

The symmetrical three-bay front includes corner pilasters, deep eaves with a dentil cornice, and a small central pediment, which also has a dentil cornice above the slightly protruding central bay. The deeply-recessed central panelled door is positioned below a four-centred fanlight, flanked by two-light windows with four-centred heads. The upper window was omitted during the 1955 rebuilding. Each side of the church features two two-light windows with four-centred heads, margin glazing, and arched lights.

Inside, the west gallery is supported by iron columns and features ornamental iron balusters. The rostrum includes 19th-century turned balusters and some 20th-century wrought iron elements. The ritual east wall has a tall triangular-headed recess in moulded plaster, adorned with a text around the head, and there is a set of 19th-century benches.
