Description

Pear Tree Cottage is a cottage dating from around the 17th century. It is constructed of slate rubble, with the front and ends rendered. The roof is made of scantle slate, featuring a gable end on the right (west) and a half-hipped end on the left. The cottage has a large stone rubble gable end stack on the right and a stone rubble lateral stack at the rear of the east end.

The layout appears to consist of two rooms; the larger room on the right has a gable end stack, while the smaller room on the left is heated by the lateral stack at the back. There is a large stair turret at the rear right corner. The current front entrance leads directly into the right-hand room, and the rear doorway is blocked, though it is unclear if it was directly opposite the front doorway. There is a later outshut at the left end and a small lean-to against the rear stair turret.

The exterior features three storeys with a three-window range. On the ground floor, there are three horizontally sliding sash windows, with the left and right windows having old frames with thick glazing bars, while the left of centre window is a 20th-century replacement. The central entrance is a 20th-century glazed door with a small slated canopy. The first floor has two small early 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars on either side. At the rear, there is a semi-circular stair turret on the left with a small later lean-to added. There is a straight joint to the right of centre and a lateral rear stack to the right. The ground floor has small windows and a window above to the left, along with a blocked doorway to the right and a blocked window above.

Inside, there are closely spaced roughly hewn cross-beams, and a stone newel stair in the rear stair turret. There are later straight framed stairs in the rear of the east room, and it appears there is a timber lintel above the blocked fireplace at the west end. The first floor and roof structure have not been inspected.
