Description
Steps Cottages is a row of four millworkers' cottages that have been converted into two dwellings, dating from the early 19th century. The cottages are constructed from rendered stone rubble and feature an asbestos slate roof with hipped ends. The right end has a slightly higher ridge, and there are three large stone rubble and rendered lateral stacks at the rear. The overall plan is rectangular and single depth, with each cottage originally having either one or two rooms heated by fireplaces at the back.
The exterior is three storeys high and has an approximately six-window range. The fenestration is not quite symmetrical, featuring 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars and small panes, along with small square windows on the second floor, all having slate cills. There is a 20th-century plank door to the left and a 20th-century panelled door to the right, with the doorways in between having been blocked. The interior has not been inspected. These cottages were built for workers at the nearby woollen mills on Woodland Road in Harbertonford.
