Description
A pair of cottages, likely dating from the 17th or early 18th century, with later 18th or 19th-century additions. The left side of the front wing is slate-hung on the first floor. The roof is steeply pitched with asbestos tiles, featuring gable ends that abut adjacent houses and a half-hipped end to the front wing. There is a central axial stack with a short rendered shaft heightened in brick and topped with slate cowls, along with a truncated stack on the left side of the front wing.
Originally, the cottages may have been a single dwelling. May Cottage, on the left, has a two-room plan with a central entrance, the right-hand room heated by an axial stack. The Cottage, on the right, originally had a single room in the main range, also likely heated from the axial stack, plus a single-room plan wing at the front, featuring a lateral stack on the left.
The front facade is asymmetrical, with four windows. The windows are mostly 19th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. The ground floor right-hand window of May Cottage is a horizontally sliding sash with glazing bars, while the ground floor right-hand window of The Cottage has a two-storey wing with a truncated stack to the left, a large late 19th or 20th-century sash window on the front wall, and a 20th-century door on the right side.
The only interior feature noted is the roof structure, which includes straight principals with halved lapped and pegged collars and trenched purlins. One roof truss in The Cottage has a small additional collar below the apex.
