Description
The School House is a house, originally built as the schoolmaster's residence for the adjacent school, The Old School. It dates from 1849. The walls are slate rubble with granite dressings, topped by a steeply pitched asbestos slate roof with cross-gables on the left and right sides, featuring ornate pierced bargeboards. Rendered chimney stacks are located on the side walls. The house is built in a Tudor style.
The plan consists of two main front rooms, with a central lobby entrance flanked by a porch, and service rooms located in a rear outshut. The house is two storeys with an attic. The front elevation is symmetrical, with two windows on each side. A steeply pitched gabled porch with ornate pierced bargeboards sits centrally, incorporating a chamfered four-centred arch doorway with a glazed door. The ground and first floors have chamfered granite mullion windows with three lights, topped with cement weathered lintels. Single-light attic windows are set into each gable. A rear outshut was extended and heightened in the 20th century. The interior remains uninspected. According to White’s Directory of 1878, the house was given for the schoolmaster's use in 1849 by Richard Browne Esq of Englebourne.
