Description

HARBERTON SX7856-SX7956 HARBERTONFORD 15/427 Harbertonford Bridge

GV II

Road bridge over Harbourne River. Circa mid C19. Slate rubble with local Devon limestone coping to parapets. Single span segmental arch with slate voussoirs. Slate string course above at road level. Parapets with chamfered coping terminate in projecting piers at end of abutments. The string course breaks forward at terminal piers. In 1664 Harbertonford Bridge was reported to the Sessions as being in need of repair. In 1809 James Green, the county surveyor, recorded a stone bridge with two arches, each 9 feet in span, which has "lately" been widened to allow a roadway 17 feet in width. (Henderson and Jervoise). The existing bridge would be a circa mid C19 replacement of that bridge. Source: C Henderson and E Jervoise, Old Devon Bridges, page 38.
