Description
Harbertonford Bridge is a road bridge over the Harbourne River, dating from around the mid-19th century. It is constructed of slate rubble with local Devon limestone coping on the parapets. The bridge features a single span segmental arch made of slate voussoirs, with a slate string course positioned above at road level. The parapets have chamfered coping and end in projecting piers at the abutments. The string course extends forward at the terminal piers. Historical records indicate that in 1664, Harbertonford Bridge was noted as needing repairs. By 1809, county surveyor James Green described a stone bridge with two arches, each 9 feet in span, which had recently been widened to accommodate a 17-foot roadway. The current bridge is likely a replacement from the mid-19th century.
