Description

A terrace of four cottages dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, located on Morleigh Road, Harbertonford. The cottages are constructed of colour-washed slate rubble with an asbestos tile roof, featuring gabled ends and a catslide roof at the rear. There are slate rubble gable end stacks, with the left-hand stack rendered, the right-hand stack truncated, and a central axial stack which includes a later brick shaft.

The cottages have a symmetrical four-window front. The ground floor windows are 2-light casements with slate cambered arches, while the first-floor windows are 2-light casements with timber lintels, all with slate sills. Paired doorways feature cambered slate arches, boarded doors, and asbestos tiled hoods supported by brackets.

The rear of the cottages remains largely unaltered, with a lower catslide roofline than at the front, along with casement windows and boarded doors. Small, rendered flat-roofed extensions have been added to the rear in the 20th century.

The interior of No. 4 cottage, which was inspected, features direct access from the front doorway into the front room, with a staircase at the back. The plan of Nos. 1 and 2 are mirror images of each other, as are Nos. 3 and 4. Each cottage’s principal heated room is at the front, with stairs at the rear, alongside smaller, unheated service rooms at the back. The central cottages share back-to-back fireplaces in the central stack, while the end cottages are heated by gable end stacks. Each cottage has opposing front and rear doorways, alternately to the left and right.
