Description

Southernhay is a house dating from 1830 to 1838, with a later 19th-century addition. It has stucco walls and a gable ended roof covered in asbestos slate. Rendered brick gable end stacks are also present. The house was originally built with a double depth plan, featuring a central entrance hall and stairwell, with two principal heated rooms at the front and service rooms to the rear. A single-room addition was added to the right-hand end in the later 19th century.

The original part of the house has a symmetrical three-window front, featuring contemporary 12-pane hornless sash windows. A large, central porch has an entablature with a moulded cornice and Doric columns with pilasters. The porch contains a likely 20th-century panelled door set within an original arched architrave, with intersecting glazing bars in a fanlight and a castellated cornice. The doorcase has panelled reveals. The later 19th-century addition to the right-hand end has a Gothic arched doorway and a contemporary 12-pane sash window above, along with a later 4-pane sash to its left. A Diocletian window is located in the left gable end on the top floor.

Inside, the original open-well staircase survives, featuring stick balusters, a curtail step, and a wreathed handrail. A simple moulded cornice is present in the entrance hall, and some original panelled doors remain on the ground floor. It is likely that original plasterwork and joinery may be preserved elsewhere in the house.

The building site was purchased in 1830 by John Stooke, and by 1838, a house on the site was owned by Mary Stooke.
