Description
The viaduct over the railway line in Kingskerswell is a road viaduct built between 1846 and 1848, designed by engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It is constructed from limestone blocks with dressed coping stones, featuring brick arches and a stringcourse. The structure has seven spans, including four elliptical arches on the left, followed by a narrower round-headed arch, a wider elliptical arch over the railway line, and a blocked arch on the right. There are projecting pilasters on either side of the main arch. The South Devon Railway received permission in 1846 to build a branch line from Newton Abbot to Torquay, which opened in December 1848.
