Description

The barn and cartshed adjoining Victoria Farm, located to the east and northeast, likely date from the 18th century, with the cartshed built in the late 18th or early 19th century. Constructed from cob and stone rubble, the buildings are whitewashed and rendered, topped with corrugated iron roofs; the barn was formerly thatched and has hipped roofs at both ends. The large barn is rectangular in shape, positioned against Forches Hill and at right angles to Victoria Farmhouse, set slightly back from it. A lean-to cartshed connects the barn to the farmhouse at the south end, with an entrance situated between the two structures.

The barn, which was formerly lofted, retains some crossbeams, while the cartshed is single-storey. The barn features large double doors with a chamfered timber lintel that has run-out stops, facing the yard behind the house. To the left of the door, part of the cob has been replaced with heavy elm planks. The rear elevation includes what appears to be a re-sited 18th-century domestic door with fielded panels, opposite the double doors. The cartshed has a three-light casement window in the end that overlooks Forches Hill. Inside the barn, there are pegged A-frame trusses. An undated photograph shows the barn with its original thatched roof. The buildings have group value with the farmhouse and are situated on an important corner site in the village center.
