Description
Rose Cottage is a house that likely underwent remodelling in the early 18th century, originally built as an earlier structure. It is constructed of cob and stone rubble, with the front wall rebuilt in stone on the right side. The roof is made of corrugated iron over thatch and is hipped at the ends. There is a truncated right end stack and two internal front lateral stacks. The layout consists of a single depth, three rooms wide, with the center room flanked by passages. The right-hand passage includes the main staircase, and there are two front doors, one leading into each passage. An outshut is located at the left end.
The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical front with three windows. There is a 20th-century gabled glazed porch at the left-hand door and a 19th-century glazed porch at the right-hand door. The windows are timber casements with glazing bars, either from the 19th or 20th century, with two and three lights.
Inside, the cottage has not been altered this century and features very low ceilings, with a chamfered crossbeam in the center room. Early features may be hidden behind later plaster. The roof has straight principal rafters of large scantling over the right end, likely from the 17th or 18th century, while other timbers are plastered over. The apex of the roof has not been inspected. Rose Cottage is situated in an important position in the village center.
