Description

Rock Cottage is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century or earlier, with a 20th-century addition on the left end. It is constructed of whitewashed rendered cob and stone rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the right end and gabled at the left end. The building features a projecting front lateral stack with set-offs. The layout probably consists of two rooms with a central entrance; the right-hand room is heated by the front lateral stack, while the left-hand room has a stack at the left end but may have been unheated originally.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with one window. There is a 20th-century front door to the left of the stack, along with one small ground floor window and a 20th-century three-light timber casement window with glazing bars on the first floor. The right side of the building has a first-floor three-light timber casement window with glazing bars. The rear elevation, which faces Forches Hill, features one first-floor and one ground-floor two-light timber casement window with glazing bars, as well as one small ground-floor 20th-century window. There is a plaster armorial bearing with supporters of unknown date on the rear wall, which is identical to the armorial bearings found at Old Bailey Farmhouse. Access to the interior was not possible at the time of the survey in 1987, but it is said to have exposed carpentry.
