Description
This small house in Broadhempston likely dates to the late 17th century. It's constructed of rendered rubble with an asbestos slate roof and gable ends. Two rendered rubble stacks, featuring dripcourses, are visible at each gable end. Originally, the house probably comprised two rooms, heated by the gable end stacks, with a passage that has since disappeared. A 19th-century outshut was added to the rear.
The house currently has two large rooms on the ground floor and an attic space. The front elevation has an asymmetrical arrangement of four windows on the front, six windows in total on the ground floor. All the windows are 20th-century replacements with glazing bars. A ground-floor window towards the centre right may have originally been a doorway. Rendered rubble outshuts extend along the rear wall. A 20th-century door is located in the left-hand gable end, and small single-light windows are set into each gable end at attic level.
Inside, the left-hand ground floor room retains two waney cross beams, roughly chamfered with run-out stops. The fireplace has a roughly chamfered, cambered wooden lintel. The right-hand room has a rough waney beam and a fireplace with a roughly chamfered, straight wooden lintel. Several 18th-century plank doors remain on the first floor. The staircase extends to the attic, which is divided into two plastered rooms separated by a lath and plaster partition. The roof trusses are likely original or from the 18th century; they are substantial straight timbers with lapped and pegged, slightly cambered collars.
The house survives in a fairly unaltered condition, retaining several original features and its traditional exterior appearance.
