Description
Tumbles Cottage is a small house that dates back to the early 16th century, with modifications made in the 17th century and extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure features rendered rubble and cob walls, topped with a gable-ended asbestos slate roof. An axial granite ashlar stack, which has drip courses and is offset from the ridge, is a notable feature.
The original layout of the house is not entirely clear, but it likely extended further on the left side. Currently, the older part of the house consists of two rooms, with a dividing axial stack that heats the larger room on the left. This stack was added to an open hall that probably had a central hearth, and the house was ceiled at that time. In the 19th century, a single-storey addition was made to the right-hand end, which was later raised to two storeys in the 20th century.
The front of the house is asymmetrical with two windows. On the right side, there is a two-light metal frame casement window from the 20th century, and above it, a two-light wooden casement window in a dormer. On the left side, the ground floor features an early 16th-century three-light wooden mullion window, which has chamfered edges and rounded arched heads, although the mullions have been replaced in the 20th century. A 20th-century lean-to porch or conservatory is built in front of the right side, complete with a glazed door.
Inside, there is a 17th-century fireplace that has a high chamfered wooden lintel with straight cut stops and roughly chamfered granite jambs. The roof retains one complete original truss over the left-hand room, which has substantial principal rafters with a morticed cranked collar, although it is unclear if it is smoke-blackened.
