Description

East Park Cottage is a small house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations likely made in the 19th century. It has rubble walls that are rendered at the front and a scantle slate roof featuring possibly 17th-century crested ridge tiles, with gable ends. The gable end stacks are rendered rubble with a drip course at the top, and the left-hand stack is uniquely circular above the ridge, topped with up-ended slates. The current layout consists of two principal rooms with a central stair hall. The stairs were inserted in the 19th century into a screens passage, replacing the original stairs that were located beside the lower end stack. It is possible that the house was originally larger, potentially a three-room structure with a through passage, although there is no direct evidence of this. The cottage is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical four-window front featuring early 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars. There is a 20th-century gabled porch to the right of the centre with a part-glazed door, and a lean-to 20th-century glazed porch at the left end.

The interior is notable for its high-quality features. It retains two original roof trusses with morticed cambered collars, threaded purlins, and ridge, all in good condition. The left room boasts an ornate beamed ceiling with two ovolo moulded cross beams and original ovolo moulded joists that have hollow step stops. The fireplace features a wooden lintel with chamfered ends that appear to have once extended to the jambs. A plank and muntin screen with chamfered muntins and mason's mitres separates this room from the passage. The other room contains one chamfered cross beam. Overall, East Park Cottage is a well-preserved example of a small 17th-century house, showcasing many of its original features in the interior.
