Description
This pair of cottages, likely built in the 18th century, is located immediately to the north-west of The Monk's Retreat Inn and includes a garden wall in front. The left-hand cottage is the older of the two and features rubble walls with brick dressings around the windows of the right-hand cottage. Both cottages have gable-ended slate roofs and projecting rubble stacks at each gable end, with the left-hand stack being rendered.
Each cottage has a two-room layout, with a larger room heated by a gable stack and a smaller unheated room. They are two storeys tall with attics. The left-hand cottage has an asymmetrical front with one window and a partially blocked door to the right. The first-floor window is a three-light casement from the late 19th or early 20th century, featuring glazing bars, and is covered by a row of slates above the lintel. The ground floor has a late 19th or early 20th century two-light casement with small panes, and a flat stone covers the partially blocked doorway. There is a single-storey 20th-century addition recessed at the left end.
The right-hand cottage has an asymmetrical two-window front, with a door left of centre and a single-light 20th-century casement to its left. The other three windows are mid-19th century 16-pane sashes with horns, and there is a 20th-century part-glazed door. Each cottage has a small attic window in the gable end, and the right gable features a 19th-century two-light casement with decorative glazing bars on the first floor. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but appeared to have been significantly modernised in the 20th century, with no old features visible. The listing also includes a low rubble garden wall immediately in front of both cottages, which extends at a higher level to the right of the right-hand cottage.
