Description

NEWTON ABBOT

SX8570 WOLBOROUGH STREET 1012-1/10/158 (South side) 22/03/83 Forecourt wall, gates and gate piers to Mackrell's Almshouses (Formerly Listed as: WOLBOROUGH STREET Forecourt wall and gatepiers to Mackrell's Almshouses)

GV II

Revetment wall, gates, gate piers and steps to the front and right return. 1870s. Devon rubblestone crazy-paving walls approx one metre high and 180m long have stepped chamfered coping. Two pairs of gate piers to the right return and far left have chamfered plinths, cornices below stepped pyramidal caps and cast-iron gates of geomtric design. Two pairs of double gates and gate piers flanking the centre are similar except that the caps are gabled to each side above the cornice with trefoil recesses to the apexes. Cast and wrought-iron gates (those flanking the centre are double), are trellised with rectangles, circles and flambeau finials. A well-detailed composition, complementing the almshouses (qv) which are situated high above the road.
