Description

This lodge is located about 600 metres southwest of Powderham Castle in Kenton, likely built in the late 18th century or early 19th century, with later enlargements in the late 19th century. It is constructed of red sandstone, with the front block being colourwashed and rendered. The roof is red tiled, gabled at the ends, featuring bands of fish scale tiles and crested ridge tiles, along with red sandstone stacks that have diagonally-set brick shafts.

The lodge has a T-shaped plan, consisting of a rectangular block at the rear and a central front wing. The front is three-sided and includes a charming semi-circular verandah around the front wing, which is probably the original part of the building. The exterior is two storeys high and presents a symmetrical one-window front elevation, with a platband and a gabled front. The gable is tile-hung and oversails the corners of the ground floor elevation, supported by pairs of deep curly brackets.

The front door is a 19th-century flush panel style, flanked by two 19th-century windows with herringbone leaded panes, and a similar window is found in the gable. The verandah is supported by chamfered timber posts and has an ornamental red tiled roof, leading to a pitched stone path. On the right side facing the road through South Town, the front block has a ground floor 20th-century window, while the rear block, which faces the road, features a two-light window on the first floor, a one-light window on the ground floor, and a half-glazed door leading into the front block. The interior has not been inspected. This lodge serves as an attractive entrance to Powderham Castle.
