Description
Southtown Gardens is a house dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It features a main range constructed of colourwashed rendered cob and stone, with a left end wing that is partly brick. The roof is thatched and gabled at both ends, with a left end stack and two rear lateral stacks on the main range, all having brick shafts.
The building has a single depth main block that is two rooms wide, with a central entrance, and a one-room plan service block at the left end aligned with the main block. It stands two storeys tall with an attic, while the service block is single storey. The front has a symmetrical arrangement with a 20th-century half-glazed front door and 18th or 19th-century sash windows, featuring ten over five panes on either side and a smaller eight over four pane sash window above the front door. There is also one attic window in the thatch. The service block has one ten over five pane sash window and a 20th-century plastic window on the left return.
The interior has not been inspected. This attractive roadside house was formerly part of the Powderham Estate and has group value with other thatched houses in South Town.
