Description

The Old Jail House is a former jailhouse that was later said to have been used as a fire station. It dates from the early 19th century and underwent interior alterations and reglazing in the 1980s. The main block is constructed of red sandstone ashlar with grey limestone dressings, featuring end stacks, with the left end stack having a stone shaft. The left end block is rendered and likely built of brick on stone rubble footings. The building has two adjoining blocks, with the left block slightly set back and the right block featuring a central entrance.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front comprising one bay on the left and three bays on the right. The right block is symmetrical, with a central 20th-century timber front door and a rectangular fanlight above it. To the right on the ground floor, there is a window that has been converted from a doorway, which features a segmental arch with a rusticated keystone. There are two smaller similar windows on the first floor and one ground floor window on the left side. The left block has one ground floor two-light window and, on the left return, one first floor and two ground floor windows. All windows have been reglazed with small pane plastic casements.

Although the interior was not inspected, the building is of historic interest as an unusual type. A request for a lock-up house was made in 1844, and in 1849, G. Timewell was appointed Superintending Constable at a salary of £25 per annum.
