Description

Numbers 1, 2, and 3 Southtown Cottages are three adjoining cottages dating from the 17th century or earlier. They are constructed of plastered cob and stone, featuring end stacks with brick shafts and a central rear lateral stack. The layout consists of a single depth plan, with a larger double-fronted cottage in the center flanked by smaller cottages on either side, each having front doors that face towards the center. The design reflects a 17th-century plan, with a large hall to the left of a cross passage and a smaller room to the right; the room at the extreme right end is likely a later addition.

The cottages are two storeys high and have a symmetrical facade with a 1:2:1 window arrangement, plus two additional windows. The left and center cottages feature 19th-century plank and cover strip front doors, while the right cottage has a later panelled front door. The windows are mostly late 18th or 19th-century small pane sliding sashes, except for one window to the right of the front door of No. 2, which is a 17th-century timber mullioned window with chamfered mullions, and one 20th-century window on the first floor of No. 3.

Inside, the two left-hand rooms have two chamfered step-stopped cross beams, while the right-hand room has a rough axial beam. The fireplaces have been rebuilt. The cottages have group value with other thatched houses and the Old Estate Office.
