Description

The Old Estate Office is a house, originally serving as the Estate Office and Steward's House for the Powderham Estate. It’s believed to be from the 18th century, based on the style of the doorcase, although it may have been re-built in the early 19th century incorporating this original feature. The exterior is whitewashed and rendered, with a slate roof and gabled ends, featuring a stack at the left end and two axial stacks.

The building follows a single-depth plan, comprising three rooms, with a central entrance leading into a heated room housing the staircase. The front facade is asymmetrical with six bays and regular window placement. A two-leaf glazed front door is set within a doorcase that features reeded pilasters and a curved hood with a dentil cornice. The windows are closely-spaced, two-light timber casements with glazing bars, likely dating to the 19th or 20th century.

Inside, the joinery includes deeply-panelled doors and cupboards, and a staircase with diamond piercings in the plain splat balusters. Two reeded chimney-pieces remain, along with 19th-century grates, one of which was introduced from another location.

The building has group value with Polruan, which adjoins it to the right, and the thatched houses situated on the opposite side of the road.
